The “Pokémon” world has grown so much since the nineties and now there are eighteen different types you can use in battle. Some types have amazing defenses while others are made to blast through opponents with sheer power. Here is a breakdown of how all the types rank based on their average strengths and weaknesses.
18. Bug-Type

Bug Pokémon get a lot of flack from fans and it is mostly because they have the lowest average stats out of everyone. They are resisted by a massive seven different types which makes it really hard to deal good damage without a strong secondary type to back them up.
17. Normal-Type

Normal types are the definition of average because their moves are not super effective against a single other type in the whole game. They do have great tanks like Snorlax and Blissey to soak up hits but most players leave them off their main teams because they lack offensive pressure.
16. Flying-Type

Flying types are incredibly balanced because they have exactly three weaknesses and three strengths while being totally immune to Ground moves. They usually have great speed and attack power but they tend to be pretty frail so you have to be careful they do not get knocked out too quickly.
15. Electric-Type

Electric types are super fast and only have one single weakness to Ground moves which makes them very tricky to deal with in a match. If you can use moves to float in the air you can actually get rid of that weakness completely and paralyze your opponents for an easy win.
14. Psychic-Type

Psychic types used to be completely unstoppable back in the first generation of games before they got rebalanced a bit later on. They still hit incredibly hard with special attacks and are great for taking down Fighting or Poison teams that try to stall your progress.
13. Rock-Type

Rock types look super tough and intimidating but they actually have five major weaknesses that make them surprisingly fragile in tough battles. They are very easy to find early in your journey though and fan favorites like Tyranitar still pack a massive punch if you use them right.
12. Water-Type

Water is the most common type in the entire franchise and it is easily one of the most versatile choices for any trainer. They only have two weaknesses and most of them can learn Ice moves to easily deal with those pesky Grass and Dragon types that block your path.
11. Grass-Type

Grass types have a tough time because they are weak to five types and resisted by seven but they offer incredible utility that saves you from using items. They can heal themselves during battle and are one of the classic starter choices that everyone loves to have on their team.
10. Poison-Type

Poison types got a huge boost in recent years because they are one of the few hard counters to the powerful Fairy type. They have very balanced stats overall and even though bad guys usually love using them they are great for breaking down tough defensive strategies.
9. Ghost-Type

Ghost types are totally unique because they have two complete immunities meaning Normal and Fighting moves cannot touch them at all. They usually focus heavily on special attacks and have awesome designs that make them super popular for competitive players who like sneaky tactics.
8. Ground-Type

Ground types are absolutely massive hitters that can completely ignore Electric attacks while smashing through five different types including Steel. They have huge attack and defense stats which makes them staples for any team that needs a reliable powerhouse to win matches.
7. Dark-Type

Dark types were introduced to finally stop the overpowered Psychic types from dominating every single battle. They look fierce and rely on tricky physical attacks to win fights while being completely immune to psychic energy which is a massive help.
6. Fairy-Type

Fairy is the newest type added to the games and they were specifically made to take down the overpowered Dragon types. They only have two small weaknesses to Steel and Poison which makes them incredibly tanky support units that are way tougher than they look.
5. Ice-Type

Ice moves are amazing because they freeze out four different types but the actual Ice Pokémon are famous for being fragile glass cannons. They can only resist themselves which makes them risky to use but their offensive power is absolutely undeniable when you need a big knockout.
4. Fire-Type

Fire is another classic starter type that is deeply loved because it blends physical and special attacks perfectly. They can resist six different types and melt through Steel defenses which is why almost every region has a powerful Fire specialist to test your skills.
3. Fighting-Type

Fighting types are pure physical brawlers that can smash through five different types including annoying Normal and Rock tanks. They have incredible attack power that compensates for their average speed and they always bring a ton of pressure to any battle scenario.
2. Steel-Type

Steel is the absolute king of defense because it boasts a ridiculous ten resistances and a total immunity to Poison. They are incredibly tough to knock out and can slow down almost any strategy which makes them the ultimate shield for your team.
1. Dragon-Type

Dragon types are still the most powerful creatures in the entire “Pokémon” world thanks to their massive legendary stats. They have a giant base stat average that outclasses everyone else and their sheer raw firepower easily overcomes the fact that they are only super effective against themselves.
