Some horror films make a mark on you because they’re a bit too real. Some stories are made up, but some might originate from true events, local folklore, or creepy experiences. There’s a realism to that which can make every shadow, sound, and twist even more chilling. These horror movies make it impossible to forget the reality of the unknowns, from the well-known hauntings to the most baffling cases.
Trip to Bhangarh
Friends visit the historic Bhangarh Fort in Rajasthan, known for its eerie reputation and soon face strange consequences. There are stories of curses from a holy man and a royal history that locals claim to be the reason for the site’s neglect, and there are still regulations that prevent overnight visitors. The movie is able to capture the air of unease that has been associated with these old tales.
Pari
A man becomes entangled with a woman who carries a dark supernatural burden rooted in forbidden rituals. The story deals with the reality of the actual incidents of black magic and possession mentioned in some communities, which gives a more grounded and disturbing perspective of the real fear of the unknown around us.
Chhorii
A pregnant woman who finds herself in a village where disappearances and bizarre rituals abound. It draws on folk traditions and socially reported practices in rural areas to amplify the horror through the link of the unknown to the familiar, the community.
Tumbbad
An elderly man passionately seeks his family’s buried treasure in his hometown but finds an ancient entity instead. Based on the Marathi folklore and stories of greed leading to supernatural consequences, the film sets up a rising sense of grim inevitability that is tied to the oral traditions.
Bulbbul
Set in colonial Bengal, where an innocent young bride is transformed by the mysterious happenings and vendetta in a village. Based on local folklore and social history of that time, it tells stories about chudails and strong women, which adds a lot of visual content to the exploration of hidden stories from history.
3 A.M.
A group of friends embark on a reality show to expose secrets of an abandoned mill where bizarre and supernatural incidents have been whispered about. With stories of weird incidents at abandoned industrial zones in Mumbai and the excitement of a late-night dare, it’s a combination of curiosity and suspense.
Stree
Stree follows a small-town tailor who teams up with friends to confront a mysterious female spirit that abducts men at night. The narrative is based on the chilling urban legend of “Nale Ba” from the 1990s in certain parts of Karnataka, where individuals left messages on doors to fend off a witch-like entity. Combines humor and chills in a manner grounded in common beliefs of the general family.
Mahal
This is a classic black and white story of a man who is attracted to a mysterious mansion and a woman who appears to be from a different time. It loosely links with stories in Ashok Kumar’s life where he encounters things that cannot be explained which helped create the early Bollywood fascination with lingering hauntings and the atmosphere.
