We all have a great beginning to a series, but then comes a down period in the series which makes us feel impatient. Shining Girls, a sci-fi thriller from Apple TV+, delivered a refreshing take on the genre with an eight-episode run that never loses its momentum. It is a blend of mystery, time-bending and raw human emotion set to a clever, solid story that is easy to get lost in.
A Survivor’s Shifting World

Elisabeth Moss’s Kirby Mazrachi is a newspaper archivist in Chicago. Her life has been a mess for years, and she is constantly changing with her surroundings. Even the simplest things, such as her home, her job and her relationships, change seemingly unannounced, and she is unable to hold on, looking for answers.
Time and Reality in Flux

The series follows the journey of Kirby’s world passing through several aspects of the present. These changes come in without flashy effects but rather in the manner of quiet unease. It asks us to think about memory, identity, and things that we are used to or take for granted in our daily lives.
Strong Supporting Cast Elevates It

The ensemble is completed by such characters as Phillipa Soo as Jin-Sook and others. The characters bring additional levels to the story. Numerous connections between their stories are subtle and rewarding, but not distracting from the overarching plot.
Chicago in the Nineties Setting

The story is set in the 1990s in Chicago and details are described as if they were from that era, including details about the newspaper offices, neighborhoods and atmosphere. The science-fiction aspect of the film stands out more than in another setting and allows viewers to immerse themselves in the time and place.
Building Suspense Episode by Episode

Every episode further unravels the mystery and enriches Kirby’s personal problems. The pacing lets you see character moments and twists, but it is not rushed or dragged out. It keeps the interest alive throughout the entire script from start to finish.
Smart Adaptation Choices

The show is adapted in a thoughtful way from the novel and uses some of the novel’s threads over eight episodes. It maintains the essence of the story while making it comprehensible to an audience that has not read the book.
Perfect for Mystery Fans

This is a good fit for readers who appreciate gentle thrillers with more abstract themes and are drawn to solving a murder. It has enough procedural elements and a unique premise to be equally appealing to both fans of grounded mysteries and fans of speculative fiction.
Why It Deserves More Attention

In 2022, Shining Girls released quality in silence on Apple TV+. The story is complete, the characters are good, and it’s well done, so it is well worth seeking out today, and it is definitely a limited series that won’t waste your time.
